How to Play

Walking cards offers different games, intentions, and frames that can be explored while walking. The standard game can be played with one, two, or three cards. These cards are pulled from three different (shuffled) Draw Stacks.

The 3 Draw Stacks

  1. Game Stack: consists of Game Cards
  2. Compass Stack: consists of Compass Cards
  3. Lens Stack: consists of Lens Cards

The 3 Card Types

  1. Game Cards
    • These are standard cards—each card illustrates a kind of game you can play while going for a walk.
  2. Lens Cards
    • These cards augment a standard Game Card (or walk) by acting as a frame through which you can interpret the Game Card (or walk). They are either words/phrases or colors.
  3. Compass Cards
    • These cards augment a standard Game Card (or walk) by acting as a way-finding mechanism—they outline a purpose, direction, spirit, approach, methodology, or intention one might bring to a Game Card (or walk).

Playing the Game

On the play page, we draw three cards for you at random—one from each of the Draw Stacks.

The Game Card is shown by default. Read and apply it to your walk to the best of your ability and imagination.

Optionally, you can chose to reveal both a Lens Card and a Compass Card to change the dynamics of the experience—sometimes this can make things easier by honing in on how you interpret the Game Card, and other times it can be a challenge to discover how they all fit together.

Three new cards are drawn every 12 hours, so you can come back daily to get a new set of random cards. This also means that everyone who views the site will see the same three cards at any given time which allows for multiplayer participation even when your friends and family are in different locations.

One of the best parts of the games are sharing your experiences with others who had the same card(s) but may have had a wildly different experience.

After your walk…

Another wonderful habit that works particularly well after walking, is journaling—move the body, move the mind. Try keeping a Writing Journal to explore further in a different medium.
